PLEASE CALL/EMAIL NOW: There is still time to raise the minimum wage for Hawaii’s struggling workers

GUEST POST BY GARY HOOSER

This past Friday, the House was unable to get the approvals needed from their Finance Committee to pass the minimum wage bill out of the Conference Committee.

Unless another committee meeting is scheduled tomorrow, April 30 the bill will be dead. So your help is needed now!

We can still do this IF Leadership in the House and Senate are sincere about wanting to increase the minimum wage.

1) Conference rules regarding notification could be waived if President and Speaker agree, and Conference Committee could reconvene tomorrow April 30.

2) Conference Committee could theoretically agree on a CD1 at same time, April 30th

3) House and Senate could then have final reading on May 2 after receiving 48 hours notice required by constitution.

Unless something is passed this year, struggling families will pay a real  price for the legislature’s inaction. Hardworking people on every island will fall further behind and deeper into poverty – while they await possible legislative action next year.  They will never catch up on the year that is lost, and of course there is no guarantee the legislature will act even next year.

PLEASE CALL/EMAIL NOW, YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND THE LEADERSHIP AND LABOR CHAIRS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE.  ASK THEM TO PASS A STRONG MINIMUM WAGE BILL THIS YEAR!

Speaker Saiki:

All communications should be polite, professional and firm. Call and email now and no later than noon April 30th.

The blogpost draws from the email alert sent out by Gary Hooser this evening. Mahalo nui, Gary.
