“We are all agents of transfiguration. Go forth and transform your personal relationships, your community, your world, so it becomes hospitable to joy, to justice, to freedom, to peace.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu

“Today I stand here by your side, privileged and honored, entering our lifelong journey

together with our family and friends.

My life has become the never-ending story with you. You have entered my life and opened my eyes to a whole new world.

For the first time in my life I feel whole and complete, something I never thought possible.

We have become one, sometimes even twins.

Today I make my commitment to you.

To love you unconditionally, stand by your side

no matter where, continue to learn,

make mistakes and grow with you.

I love you John George Roth.”

“I feel like the luckiest man,

to have someone like you

who makes every part of my life more fulfilling,

more fun,

more true,

more genuine.

I like my work better,

I like my friends better,

I like movies better,

especially movies during the day.

And I like me better.

That’s the most important thing about our relationship–that you bring out the best in me.

Thank you for that and I love you always and forever.”

Oh Please God, if it is in Your power, can we have something just as beautiful as this in Florida? I am getting old……Amen.

  2. Susie Roth says:

It still brings happy tears to my eyes…

  3. Maybe it also will to those who still struggle to understand, Susie. A friend sent me this example of at least one instance where dialogue did lead to understanding and acceptance. Thanks to you and your son for letting me share the vows.

  4. Pat Gozemba says:

These vows of John and David are simple yet totally trans-figurative as is suggested in the title of the piece. I am so grateful that the US is, with the help of many committed activists, parents, and courageous lovers, moving towards an equitable society.
