. . . the LORD was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake–
but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake there was fire–
but the LORD was not in the fire.
After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
but the LORD was not in the fire.
After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak
1 Kings 19:19-11
All around us
Is the near unbearable pressing in of noise.
Riots in London. Famine in Somalia.
The cacophony of Washington DC.
The raging bulls and wounded bears
Of Wall Street. The crash of helicopters.
The armies of zealots and xenophobes
The intrusiveness of petty bureaucrats
The brazenness of the ignorant
And the ignorance of the newly anointed
Who jostle and posture and pontificate.
Amidst the incessant crush of noise
The whisper of wisdom expires.
And the Word would be lost
Were it not that love
Is irrationally obstinate
And endures.
